Zimmermann's case study provides a detailed analyses of a transport from Essen to
Terezín. The author shows the structure and dynamic of a deportation and describes what people
and authorities were involved. This was a complex process based on a division of labour. In the
deportation process from Essen to Terezín, the tax office, the labour exchange, the banking
institutions (where the deported had their accounts), the Reichsbahndirektion Essen
and a number of others were involved or did at least know about the deportations.
